Super Eagles Name Unity Cup, Russia Squads Without Osimhen
Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle has named his squad selections for the upcoming Unity Cup clash with Ghana and a high profile friendly against Russia, leaving out star players Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman a decision that has stirred conversation among fans.
A total of 26 players have been called up for the Unity Cup, which aims to promote African football solidarity. Nigeria will kick off the tournament against Ghana on May 28. Meanwhile, a streamlined 21-man squad has been picked for the friendly against Russia on June 6.

For the Russia encounter, the squad includes defensive stalwarts William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, and Bright Osayi-Samuel, with Victor Boniface, Tolu Arokodare, and Sadiq Umar leading the forward line. Raphael Onyedika and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru are brought in to add dynamism to the midfield.
No official reason has been provided for the omission of Osimhen and Iwobi, both of whom have enjoyed strong seasons at club level. Musa’s inclusion, however, hints at a strategic blend of leadership and experience for what may be his final national team appearances.

We must ask: What exactly is Nigeria’s long-term plan for the Super Eagles? The latest squad announcement by Coach Eric Chelle opens more questions than it answers. With stars like Osimhen, Iwobi, and Lookman omitted and no explanation offered the Super Eagles’ opaque at best.
Yes, squad rotation is essential, especially in tournaments like the Unity Cup and friendlies that serve as tactical laboratories. But without clear communication, fans are left to speculate. Is this a case of injury concerns, player fatigue, or internal disagreements? Or is the coach simply exploring alternative options? We deserve transparency.
That said, the return of Ahmed Musa sends a powerful message. While some may argue he’s past his prime, we believe leadership on and off the pitch remains invaluable. Musa’s presence could anchor the squad emotionally, particularly as younger players like Mustapha, Uche, and Boniface begin to rise.
It’s also promising to see domestic league talents and fringe players included. A healthy national team should constantly evolve, but that evolution must be coherent, not chaotic. Each inclusion or omission should reflect a clear vision — not guesswork.
